I’ve been part of the pastoral team at Pearce since January 2008. When I talk with my friends they ask me, “How have things been going at Pearce?” I answer, “It’s been fun!”
And I really mean it! I have found pastoring at Pearce not only to be satisfying and challenging, but I have found it to be delightfully fun. What a great thing to feel entering my thirtieth year of pastoral ministry!
I suppose there are many reasons why I find Pearce to be a great place to pastor. Obviously, the people make this place special. There are so many wonderful stories of how people’s spiritual journeys have brought them to Pearce. I’ve talked with those who have been a part of this church for more than sixty-five years and with others who began attending last month. Each of them has a fascinating tale of how God has brought them to this community of faith. There’s great joy in getting better acquainted with the Pearce family.
Perhaps I’m having fun because I’m working with a great pastoral team. There’s Pastor Harold Scott who has the longest tenure at Pearce and oversees pastoral care of the congregation. He’s a Canadian who reminds us of his homeland at every opportunity, especially during the hockey season. Pastor Dave Carden, also a long-timer at Pearce, oversees missions, small groups and other ministry areas. He also tends to serve as chauffer on pastoral team excursions. Pastor Mike Kuhlkin directs student ministries. He’s a bit off the wall, but we love him! John Tassone joined us in October 2008 as our church administrator. He keeps us organized and insures that things get done! Tim Lambert just joined us earlier this year as our director of music and celebratory arts. Lydia Monroe oversees children’s ministries with wisdom and grace. What a team!
And there are so many others on staff at Pearce that make it a joyful place. There’s the Common Grounds staff, serving up fresh cups of delicious coffee. Jim Heeks and his team provide great meals at a whole range of functions. Bob Antes and his team keep the Pearce facility, all 137,000 square feet, in beautiful condition. The office staff, under Barb Howell’s direction, does an amazing amount of work and they make the rest of us look good!
It’s fun to be at Pearce, too, because we have a great opportunity to serve an awesome God and to show his love to those around us.
